TILDA visit to Cairo

A delegation from TILDA recently travelled to Egypt to attend a meeting in the American University of Cairo entitled, ‘Strengthening the Evidence Base to Support Healthy Aging in the Arab region’. In attendance were a number of international representatives from the United States, Europe, Jordan, Lebanon and South Africa. The purpose of this meeting was to present existing Harmonised Cognitive Ageing Project (HCAP) studies to high-level decision-makers in Egypt and to facilitate knowledge exchange between the established studies and the Egyptian HCAP team regarding funding acquisition, longitudinal study design, operationalisation of HCAP data collection methodologies, and the potential for harmonisation and further collaboration.

In collaboration with our colleague Professor Brian Lawlor of the Global Brain Health Institute, TILDA were delighted to be invited by Professor Mohamed Salama and Professor Hoda Rashad to speak at this event. Dr Joanne Feeney, Senior Research Fellow and Dr Ann Monaghan, Project Manager, presented an operational overview of both TILDA and TILDA HCAP, and detailed TILDA’s impact to date on policies in ageing in Ireland and internationally, and the future of TILDA HCAP.

Drs Feeney and Monaghan were also shown a warm welcome by Consultant Geriatrician and former GBHI Atlantic Fellow Dr Hany Ibrahim and his team at the recently opened Ain Shams Geriatric Hospital in Old Cairo, where they were given a tour of the cognitive training facilities and met with the larger collaborative team of HCAP researchers.
