TILDA Prepares for Wave 7 Data Collection with Intensive Interviewer Training

Posted on 4 February 2025

As TILDA embarks on Wave 7 of data collection, a comprehensive interviewer training programme was recently delivered in Dublin, Limerick and Athlone to prepare new interviewers for their vital role in engaging with participants across Ireland. Held from 15th to 23rd January at the Green Isle Hotel (Dublin), the Castletroy Park Hotel (Limerick) and the Hodson Bay Hotel (Athlone), the sessions ensured that interviewers were equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to uphold the high standards of TILDA’s research.

In partnership with Ipsos B&A, the two-day training was led by TILDA’s Management and Data Teams, providing an in-depth overview of the study’s methodology, safeguarding procedures, and key protocols in data protection and informed consent. Interviewers participated in mock assessments under the guidance of TILDA’s Data Team, gaining hands-on experience with essential study components. Each interviewer completed a formal accreditation process, ensuring they are fully qualified to conduct assessments accurately and sensitively.

A particular focus of the training was TILDA’s health and cognitive assessments, which play a crucial role in evaluating the health, mobility, and cognitive well-being of Ireland’s ageing population. Among these, the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, which assesses functional mobility and balance, allows researchers to track participants’ ability to stand, walk three metres, and return to a seated position. Cognitive assessments measuring memory, verbal fluency, and other cognitive functions provide critical insights into cognitive ageing over time. TILDA and Ipsos B&A concluded the training with a strong sense of collaboration and readiness. With new skills and certifications, the interviewers are now prepared to begin fieldwork in the new year, supporting TILDA’s mission to expand our understanding of ageing in Ireland.
