TILDA Participates in START European Researchers’ Night 2024

Posted on 17 October 2024

DUBLIN, IRELAND – 27th September 2024 – The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) is proud to take part in this year’s START European Researchers’ Night, a vibrant event held at Trinity College Dublin to celebrate and promote the value of research to the wider community. European Researchers' Night, part of a series of pan-European science festivals, aims to foster interest in scientific research and engage the public in the impactful work being conducted across Europe.

Visitors to the TILDA station were offered a unique hands-on experience to learn about the science of ageing and explore ways to maintain strength and vitality as we grow older. Through the "Measure Your Strength" activity, participants could assess their grip strength—a key indicator of overall health and an early predictor of age-related health challenges. This engaging exercise encouraged conversations around the importance of physical health and strength across the lifespan and highlighted the role of regular physical activity in promoting longevity and wellbeing.

The TILDA team, including researchers, volunteers, and students, was on hand to discuss findings from TILDA's extensive research, which spans over a decade of tracking health and wellbeing among older Irish adults. This included insights into how factors like diet, mental health, social engagement, and physical activity contribute to healthy ageing. Interactive displays and conversations throughout the night provided attendees with a deeper understanding of how TILDA’s research informs national policies and helps shape healthcare services that support healthy, independent ageing in Ireland.

Additionally, the Ageism Pledge Wall, a key feature of the TILDA stand, invited attendees to pledge support for tackling age-related stereotypes and bias. With contributions from both younger and older visitors, the pledge wall aimed to encourage a more inclusive and positive view of ageing, underscoring TILDA’s commitment to advancing societal attitudes that promote respect and dignity for all generations.

European Researchers’ Night 2024 was a remarkable opportunity for TILDA to connect with the community, share insights, and inspire future generations of researchers. We extend our sincere thanks to our team of volunteers and organisers, as well as to the many visitors who joined us to celebrate the science of healthy ageing.
