Professor Annette L. Fitzpatrick, PhD

Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor, Department of Medical Gerontology, Trinity College Dublin

Annette Fitzpatrick, PhD, is an epidemiologist and Research Professor in the School of Public Health and School of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Loyola University Chicago, Master’s in Ecology from Southern Illinois University and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Washington. She has devoted her career to research in the field of aging with a focus on cardiovascular disease and its risk factors as well as in dementia and cognitive function. She was the first Program Director for the Cardiovascular Health Study, a longitudinal cohort study of heart disease and stroke in adults age 65 and older initiated in 1989, and continues to conduct research in national and international studies including the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory clinical trial (GEMS), the Dhulikhel Heart Study (Nepal). Cognition in Primary Care (CPC), and the Dog Ageing Project.

She has been Principal Investigator of 20 studies sponsored by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US, Chile, Nepal, Cambodia and Vietnam. She has published over 235 articles in scientific peer-reviewed journals. As a Fulbright Scholar (January through June 2022) she has been working with faculty at TCD to develop and offer instruction in public health research operations, facilitate development of grant applications, and collaborate on analyses using data from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). She welcomes the opportunity to meet colleagues from TCD and offer assistance in the areas of epidemiology and scientific research.
