Dr. Helen O'Brien
Dr. Helen O’ Brien is a TILDA Research Fellow undertaking a PhD under the guidance of Professor Rose Anne Kenny. Helen also works in the Falls and Blackouts Unit in St. James's Hospital and participates in the Thrombolysis on-call rota. She completed her degree in Medicine at University College Dublin in 2007, completed the Basic Specialist Medical Training Scheme based in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and achieved Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2010. She is currently in her third year of the Geriatrics Specialist Training Scheme.
Helen has a wide range of clinical experience in Geriatric Medicine in large university teaching hospitals, smaller community based units and long term care facilities, and also has clinical experience in Acute General Medicine from working in St. James’s Hospital, Galway University Hospital and the Mater Hospital. Her last clinical role was in 2012-13 in St. James’s Hospital, where she attained specialist skills in General Internal Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine.
Her research interests include Frailty, Cognitive Impairment, End of Life Care and optimal care of the older patient in the acute hospital setting. She has published in Aging Health, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and the Irish Journal of Medical Science.
