Mary O' Shea joined the TILDA team as a Research Nurse in May 2014 for Wave 3 to conduct the health assessments. She completed her training qualifying with honours at St Vincents University Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. She then trained and qualified as a midwife from the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, Dublin. She subsequently completed a 1 year Specialist Oncology nursing programme in Centennial Medical Centre, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Following this she returned to Newcastle, spending 7 years in Newcastle General Hospital in the Neurosurgical HDU (High Dependency Unit). On returning to Ireland she took up a position in Mount Carmel Hospital in the HDU. She worked here for the next 14 years, as a Clinical Nurse Manager for the majority of this time. During her time there she completed her BSc in Nursing Management, graduating with honours from University College Dublin in 2008. While in UCD she was the recipient of the Judith Chavasse Award (BSc Nursing) in 2007. She has a keen interest in healthy ageing and the ageing process and is excited to see the potential that TILDA has to contribute to making Ireland a great place to grow old in.
